Portraits Nᵒ.2: Edward Grubb (1740-1816)

Edward Grubb, self portrait, c. 1790.
Held at Stratford-upon-Avon Town Hall.

Edward Grubb (1740 (Towcester)-1816 (Stratford)) came to Birmingham in about 1769, in his late 20s, and is thought to be the first fine art sculptor in the town. Edward later painted portraits, and it was noted that 'his numerous paintings on canvas, however coarse in execution, show his success in delineating the human face’.* See a selection of his paintings here.
